VESTUARIO PARA LA ESCENA EXHIBITION
Costume for the Stage 2022
The Association Vestuario a Escena Mx, A.C., in collaboration with the OISTAT, presented the exhibition "Costume for the Stage 2022" after three years of searching, due to the fact that the pandemic of 2020 threatened the realization of the event. The show, which took place in the Principal and Alternativa galleries of the Centro Nacional de las Artes from May 11 to June 19, 2022, in Mexico City, brought together the work of 40 international and Mexican designers, exhibiting the best of their work since 2000. Admission was free with the aim of recognizing and showcasing the art of professional stage costume design.
The exhibition presented more than 200 pieces, including sketches, photographs and costumes, which demonstrated the talent and concerns of the designers. These works transformed the costume into a discursive and narrative element essential to the scene, reflecting different generations and cultural heritage. They also explored the stylistic approaches that marked the beginning of this millennium.
"Costume for the Stage 2022" stood out for being an affirmative and investigative exhibition on theatrical costume design in Mexico. Through a call for entries, works by active Mexican designers were selected and invited to the OISTAT international costume congress, held in Mexico in May 2022. This initiative sought to showcase the complexity and variety of costume creation in the country.
The exhibition highlighted the designer-costume piece pairing, allowing a detailed appreciation of the pieces by removing them from their traditional context on stage. Divided into two parts, it showcased Mexican and international designers, with each room presenting unique pieces that established visual links between them.
The show expanded its meaning by representing diversity, territory and time through the designs presented. It included works exhibited in various forums from 2000 to 2021, in disciplines such as contemporary dance, ballet, theater and opera, in small and large format, independent and institutional productions. This showed that creativity and talent have no time or geographical boundaries.

COSTUMES FOR THE STAGE EXHIBITION
CURATORIAL CONCEPT
The exhibition Vestuario para la Escena, is an affirmative, questioning and inquiring exhibition, centered around theatrical costume design. The exhibition has a meta-narrative which is to show the complexity and variety of costume creation in Mexico. Through a call for entries, works by professionally active Mexican designers were chosen. At the same time, the designers present at the International Costume Congress, organized in Mexico at the beginning of May 2022, were invited to participate.
The binomial designer-piece of clothing activates from the beginning the production of meaning.
However, this exhibition moves the costumes away from their traditional status, from their usual space of visibility, which is the stage, and allows us to see them in detail, making new narratives emerge that highlight the texture, technique and style of each piece, as well as establishing links between the works themselves.
The curatorship consisted of showing coincidences and links between the works of different designers, forming micro-narratives and making the images dialogue with each other. Different languages: stylistic, historical, technical, formal, as well as the processes of design and realization, to reach the result, were the guide for the organization of the exhibition.
The exhibition is divided into two parts: Mexican designers and international designers. Each room has unique pieces with elements of strength and correspondence between them in order to appreciate their visual appeal.
